Exactly what does a basketball tournament have to do with the purchase of automobiles, power tools, mountain climbing equipment, linens, fragrances, office supplies and anti-oxidants? These are just a few of the items heading out the door as part of some businesses March Madness® Sale.
Yes March Madness® is a registered trademark owned by a coalition of the Illinois High School Association and the NCAA. I won’t go into the history of the term but I’d lay pretty good odds that outside of GM very few of the businesses holding a March Madness® Sale have a legal right to use the term.
Putting the legal question aside March Madness® Sales are little more than unimaginative drivel. While not as pervasive as “for all your needs” syndrome, March Madness® Sales are cliché –information our brains take in one ear and tosses out the other. But who cares about few million more advertising dollars flushed out to sea?
Perhaps I’m out of step with the times. Perhaps a legion of consumers whipped into a frenzy by their Alma Mater making it to the Sweet 16®, Elite 8® or Final Four® can be persuaded to turn the game off to buy stuff. But I doubt it.
Let’s get real. If you must tie a sale in with a basketball tournament try setting aside a portion of each sale as a donation to your favorite school’s academic scholarship fund? Maybe, just maybe, someone would care about that.
Well I’m off to have tea with the March Hare®, The Mad Hatter® and Alice. Care to join me?
